An Aboriginal Cave near Woy Woy

April 2007

This page contains photos of a cave I found beside a creek near Woy Woy. This dry, north-facing cave is about 11 metres by 4 metres. The cave contains a number of signs of Aboriginal occupation including about 8 red hand stencils on the back wall.

Sharpening grooves in the creek near the cave

The cave as seen from the creek

Oyster and other shells on the cave floor - probably the remains of Aboriginal meals

Inside the cave (looking east)

Red hand stencils on the cave wall

Inside the cave (looking west)

Wallaby footprints inside the cave - wallabies were probably on the menu here too

A fragment of tool-making rock (all artefacts should be left in place for archaeologists)

This deep waterhole near the cave would have provided drinking water in dry times

A few weeks later, I went back to the area and explored some more of the creeks. You can find pictures of this walk here.
