Geo-Sequestration

Geo-sequestration is storing the CO2 produced from coal-fired power stations underground.

Geosequestration is, in my opinion, a pipe dream with little chance of ever solving the problem. The idea is that you can keep burning coal, but dispose of the CO2 underground in old gas wells, etc. There are some serious problems with this:
  1. The gas CO2 is far, far less dense than the coal that it was produced from and thus takes up an enormous volume,
  2. It takes a lot of energy to compress CO2 and it is very difficult to capture from smoke stacks (although this can perhaps be done using zeolite to trap the CO2),
  3. The risks of large volumes of CO2 leaking out are severe as it could suffocate any people who are nearby.
The best geosequestration solution would be if the CO2 could be permanently trapped in a solid and re-buried in a form much like the original coal it came from. Or we could just leave all that coal buried and not burn it in the first place...
